Recording a Digital Cut to Tape (Remote Mode)

If you need a quick output for an in-class screening or non-professional purposes, you can do a manual record. This method is not frame accurate and audio may drift.

This method is used for a frame accurate but non-timecode specific cut to tape.Its good for class projects unless teacher specifies that your program must start at 01:00:00:00.

This is the method you would use if you have blacked and coded your tape and want to cut your sequence onto the tape so that your sequence starts at 1:00:00:00.

Press Record and play on the deck simultaneously. Press play on your timeline.

When it's done, check to make sure no audio drift has occurred.

Recording a Digital Cut to Tape (Local Mode)

This method is used for a frame accurate but non-timecode specific cut to tape.

Good for class projects unless teacher specifies that your program must start at 01:00:00:00.

1. Load a sequence into the Composer monitor. (You cannot access digital cut options without a sequence loaded.)

2. Choose Avid Menu>Clip>Digital cut.

3. Select or deselect the Entire Sequence option based on the following:

• Select Entire Sequence if you want the system to ignore any
IN or OUT points and play the entire sequence from start to finish.

• Deselect Entire Sequence if you have established IN points, OUT points, or both for recording a portion of the sequence.

4. Choose a deck from the Deck Selection pop-up menu. If the green timecode window reads: "no deck" see Deck troubleshooting.

5. Select Local in the deck control option area.

6. Select the audio and video tracks you want represented in the digital cut preview. The display of tracks in the Digital Cut tool varies according to the tracks existing in the sequence.

7. Press the Record AND Play on the deck button simultaneously.

8. Click the Play Digital Cut button (red square).

To stop the recording at any time, do one of the following:

• Press the space bar.

• Click the Halt Digital Cut button (blue square).

Recording a Digital Cut to Tape (Remote Mode)

This is the method you would use if you have black and coded your tape and want to cut your sequence onto the tape so that your sequence starts at 1:00:00:00.

Follow steps 1-4 in Recording a Digital Cut to Tape (Local Mode)

5. Select Remote in the Deck Control Options area.

6. Choose an option from the pop-up menu in the Deck Control Options area to indicate where to start recording on the tape (for class projects where your doing a digital cut to tape with leader, countdown starting at specific timecode, we usually suggest "Sequence Time," but you could also do "mark in time.")

• Choose Sequence Time to start the recording at a timecode existing on tape that matches the start timecode of the sequence. This will not work unless the tape timecode matches the sequence timecode. If you have black and coded your tape starting at 00:58:30:00, you want to make sure your sequence doesn't start before 00:58:40:00, giving the deck time to pre-roll before laying down your cut.

• Choose Record Deck Time to ignore the timecode of the sequence and to start the recording wherever the record deck is currently cued. You might use this method if you were cutting to tape a series of sequences one after the other.

• Choose Mark In Time to ignore the sequence timecode. Establish an IN point on the record tape by cueing and marking with the deck controls. If you put your "mark in" at 01:00:00:00, your sequence will begin recording at the beginning (if "entire sequence" is checked) and will record from 01:00:00:00 to the end of the sequence regardless of what the original timecode of your sequence was.

7. Select the audio and video tracks you want recorded in the digitalcut by clicking on the purple track selectors in the digital cut window.

8. Click the Play Digital Cut button. The system cues the record deck and then plays and records the digital cut.

Deck Troubleshooting

• check to make sure your deck is on. If it's off, turn it on and QUIT AVID, then open Avid again.

• check to see that the firewire is plugged into it

• choose "check decks" from the pop up menu

• If it still doesn't recognize the deck, choose "auto-configure."

• If it still doesn't work, choose "adjust decks" Choose your deck model (see 3rd diagram) by looking on the deck for brand and model #.

• If none of this works, restart the machine

• If still no luck, launch FCP and click File > Log and Capture. If FCP can see the deck, the problem is Avid-based (check your deck settings). If FCP cannot see the deck, make sure its firewire cable is plugged in. If it is, then most likely, the firewire port on the computer's motherboard has failed. Try swapping the 2 firewire cables and see if its any better. Try mounting a firewire drive on the port that doesn't seem to be working.
