Technology Services

If you would like help with any of the technology in the College of Communication, please call our Help Desk. We track requests through Web Help Desk. When your request is received, you will receive an email that contains a link that can be used to check on the status of your request. You will also receive at least one additional email - when we think your issue has been resolved.

Get Help

Please call 512-471-1199, send an email to comm-help@austin.utexas.edu or come by our offices in CMA 5.154. Visit the Web Help Desk website and log in with your email address and password. If you do not have an account with us or don't know your password, please come by and we will get you a new one.

3rd Floor Service Desk

There are MacBook laptops available for checkout at CMA’s 3rd floor service desk. They are available to current UT faculty and staff and to any student enrolled in classes for the current semester. The laptops are dual-boot - meaning they can either come up in Mac OS X or into Windows XP when you turn them on. You choose. Printing is also available.

Public Network Access

Technology Services has deployed both wireless (WiFi) and wired (Ethernet) network that is available to persons with a University affiliation (students, faculty, staff and official guests). ITS Technology Services manages the network, and is responsible for the Public Network Authentication (PNA) system that provides access to it. We benefit from 10 Gigabit-per-second uplinks to the campus network (UTnet) and the Internet, 1 Gigabit-per-second connections to our servers and student computer lab workstations, and hundreds of 100 Megabit-per-second circuits to every office, classroom and public area.

Instructional Media Center

All of the IMC’s services (3rd floor service desk, equipment checkout, media duplication and more) are available for use by Communication Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students enrolled for the current semester. Undergraduates enrolled for the current semester can only use the equipment or have duplications made with direct permission from a Communication Faculty or Staff member or Graduate student (see the section on Undergraduate use for complete details).

File Services

We also offer a number of online tools and network share folders that supply services for students, staff, faculty and approved special projects. Whenever a new tool is requested, the Tech Team works to research, install and maintains the service.

Equipment Checkout

The College of Communication’s Instructional Media Center has a wide range of Audio-Visual equipment available. From digital camcorders, cameras, and audio recorders to rolling TV/VCR carts and projectors of every sort, we try to have everything you need for your teaching or research.

CoComm Creative

CoComm Creative is a team of professional designers, programmers, video and audio specialists who produce a wide variety of media. When you have a project for academic or administrative purposes we can assist you. We also can help you with an online survey or a webcast of a special lecture. Our offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM in CMA 5.154. Services include: application development, audio / video services, and web and graphic design. Digital Media Labs

The Digital Media Labs offer currently enrolled students access to world-class non-linear audio and video workstations. Faculty, please contact us to see how we can help with your instructional digital media needs.

Mobile Computer Labs

Technology Services has 6 mobile computer labs available for use in CMA and CMB.  They can turn any room into a computer lab for you.  Each mobile lab contains 10 laptop computers with batteries and wireless internet connections.  Three of the mobile labs have Dell PCs (30 total) and three mobile labs have Macintosh Powerbooks (30 total).

Application Development

Mainframe and related web services that enhance the academic and administrative mission of the College. These include; time saving online applications for student related processes, online survey capabilities for faculty and staff, and unique solutions handle handle a variety of needs.

Media Duplication

All we need from you is the source material you want copied, blank tapes to copy them on to (sorry, we do not sell tapes), and a completed Duplication Request Form (PDF). Please fill out the form completely and be precise in your instructions to insure your duplication is done correctly.

Audio / Video

CoComm Creative provides video services through production, streaming media, videoconferencing, and webcasts for the College’s faculty and staff. Additional services include video transfers, recording, editing, and post-production for course/web development projects.

Media Collection

The collection is a quite varied and interesting mix of materials. We have video and audio tapes which should be of interest to people in every Communication department. They could prove valuable to you either in your research or in teaching classes.

Web and Graphic Design

We use a variety of tools for Web and Graphic design. Our web sites are delivered through the use of a content management system, we currently use the Oracle UCMS service provided by ITS. Content management offers the ability to streamline web publishing.

Playback Room

It is a large room with 16 carrels equipped for viewing media. Each carrel has equipment installed in it. Twelve have Mini-DV/DVCAM VCRs and 4 have Mini-DV/VHS dual VCRs in them and all carrels have DVD players in them. All carrels also receive the UT Cable TV Channels. Technology Purchasing

Technology Services consults with faculty, staff and administrators about their technology plans. Tell us where you want to take your program or course, and the Tech Team will help you figure out the specifics. Our mission is to support all of the computing and technology needs for the College, therefore, all computer-related purchases must be pre-approved by the Tech Team if you wish them to be supported by the Tech Team. Items not approved may not be supported.
