Grant-seeking Resources

Faculty are increasingly encouraged to seek external grant support for their research. This is not to say that they should distort their research just to make it more eligible for outside funds. If, however, the goals of grant-givers and College faculty coincide, then external support can be beneficial in leveraging faculty creativity and providing support for graduate students. Grants can also provide faculty release time, travel, and other support not otherwise available internally. The departments in the College vary greatly in the extent and kind of grant activity, but the Dean’s office is committed to supporting all faculty in finding support for their research and increasing the overall level of such funding. The Grants Management office assists with getting institutional approval for faculty grant proposals and provides support for actually operating the project once it is funded. The intellectual task of creating the research proposal and finding that grant, of course, is the first challenge and lies more with the individual faculty member.

It is difficult to provide one-size-fits-all advice for how best to prepare these proposals and find sources of grants. Each faculty member, with specialized knowledge of his or her field, is in the best position to know how their ideas should be expressed and how they line up with the goals of grant-givers. From time to time workshops are provided and outside consultants made available to review individual proposals. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs can assist with information about these programs. Below are some grant information resources compiled from other sources, which generally pertain to communication and communication-related fields. These resources can be used to find contact information, the major focus of the various grant-givers and the procedures they require.
