Transfer or Change Major

Students from outside The University of Texas at Austin should apply as an external transfer student. This process is handled by the University’s Office of Admissions.

The Internal Transfer Application process is for current UT students who want to:

Applications are accepted every February (for fall admission) and September (for spring admission). Students are strongly encouraged to attend an Information Session before applying.

The Internal Transfer Application for Spring 2010 is now closed. Students may check the status of their application materials here.

The next application period will begin on February 1, 2010. All application materials must be received by 5:00 pm on February 26.

Application Process

Before you apply, review the Minimum Requirements and review the Frequently Asked Questions.

The Internal Transfer Application has two steps:

1) Online Application

  • Selection/Verification of the major to which you are applying
  • Contact information verification
  • Verification that you meet the minimum requirements
  • Essays:

    a) Personal Statement (Required)
    Explain your reasons for wanting to transfer into or change your major in the College of Communication.

    b) Other relevant circumstances (Optional)
    If applicable, briefly describe any other circumstances that are pertinent to your request for transfer or major change.

2) Résumé submitted as a MS Word or PDF document to commresume@austin.utexas.edu The document title should be saved in the following format: Last Name, First Name EID

Note: Automated acknowledgement messages are instantly sent to all emails received at the resume submission email address. If you do not receive an automated reply, your email was not received. It is your responsibility to ensure that application materials have been received by the College of Communication.

Things to note about the application:

  • You may log off at any time during the application process. The information you have already entered will be saved and you may return to the application at a later time to complete the process.
  • You are STRONGLY encouraged to write your essay in a word processing program, then cut and paste the text into the transfer application.
  • Your essay is limited to 40 lines of text within the application’s essay field. Once you reach the REVIEW screen, please check your essay to ensure that it is complete.

Decision Process

The committee’s decisions are made after final grades post for the semester. All applicants are notified of the committee’s decision via email. These notifications typically are sent out in early June and early January (to allow time for the winter break). All decisions are final and may not be appealed.

Next Steps

Students who are accepted must then complete the following steps:

1. Confirm the change/add major
Students must accept their new major by clicking on a link provided in the notification email.

2. Enroll in courses at UT Austin in the following semester

3. Internal Transfer Orientation
Newly accepted Internal Transfer students must complete an orientation requirement. Details will be included with acceptance notifications.
