Wireless Upgrades in CMA, CMB and WWH

Image of Cisco Wireless Access Point

The Tech Team has worked with ITS Networking to improve the "WiFi" public wireless network in CMA and CMB. The focus is to increase coverage: almost every part of every floor of CMA, and the 1st and 4th floors of CMB are now covered. It should also improve reliability and speed

How was this accomplished? We have gone from a dozen wireless access points (WAPs) to over forty. These are also newer, faster, more "tunable" WAPs, so cell sizes can be kept smaller. This improves throughput (fewer people aggregated to a single WAP means more speed) and reduced interference.

As we work on adding additional power outlets in classrooms and public spaces, you will find our support for mobile computing improving by leaps and bounds. Stay tuned for updates.

Update 9-29-2005: Walter Web Hall is now fully covered as well.
