Three Student Essays on College Life Published in The New York Times
AUSTIN, Texas—July 27, 2009— Three students in the School of Journalism have published essays in the New York Times’ special back-to-school issue of Education Life, which was published July 26.
Junior Maggie Holmes, doctoral candidate Gabino Iglesias and junior Emily Macrander wrote about the transformative experience of college as well as the seemingly mundane aspects of college life.
Two other University of Texas at Austin students, Madeline Lewis and Sara Haji contributed photos to a multimedia slideshow.
Iglesias’s essay, “An Awful ‘Why?’ Hung Over My Head,” appeared in the Life’s Big Questions section and recounted how he questioned his decision to attend graduate school in a city far from his home in Puerto Rico.
Holmes’s essay, “Waking Up From Pompom Dreams,” was included in the College Life section and examined how life changed when her carefully executed plans fell through.
Macrander’s essay, “My Interior Monologue,” appeared in the Freshman Experience section and humorously recalled some of the more mundane aspects of campus life, including pigeons on campus and dorm life.
