Journalism Student Named Top 10 Scholar by Scripps Howard Foundation

AUSTIN, Texas — Sept. 29, 2008 — A School of Journalism student at The University of Texas at Austin has been named a 2008 Top 10 Scholar by the Scripps Howard Foundation.

Jazmine Ulloa, a senior in print journalism, was chosen based on her academic achievement, portfolio of work, demonstrated interest in journalism and an essay about her long-term career goals. She will receive a $10,000 scholarship through the annual Scripps Howard Foundation Top Ten Scholars program.

Ulloa, who is from El Paso, is the editor of Abroadly Speaking, a student-run study abroad magazine she founded, and the editor of Adelante, a student-run publication focusing on Latino issues. She produced a short documentary film on Czech techno music through Prague Stories, a study abroad program in the Czech Republic, and has interned at an independent rock music magazine in London. Prior to her current internship at The Austin American-Statesman, she interned at The Brownsville-Herald.

The Scripps Howard Foundation has made $1 million in scholarships available to 100 students since the Top Ten Scholars program began in 1999.

The nine other 2008 Top Ten Scholars represented the following universities: Arizona State University, Hofstra University, Louisiana State University, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, University of Oklahoma, University of Southern California and West Virginia University.
