Three School of Journalism students named among nation’s top journalists

AUSTIN, Texas — May 29, 2008 — Three School of Journalism students have been named among the top 100 collegiate journalists in the inaugural UWIRE 100, which honors the nation’s top collegiate journalists.

Patrick Caldwell, Claire Harlin (B.J., B.A.’08) and Adrienne Lee—all affiliated with “The Daily Texan”—were by recognized by UWIRE, a membership organization for college student media, from more than 500 nominations submitted by students and educators at 132 schools. A UWIRE panel evaluated each candidate based on demonstrated excellence in a field of collegiate journalism.

Caldwell, who grew up in Austin, was the editor of “DT Weekend,” “The Daily Texan’s” weekend entertainment supplement. Following a Study Abroad Maymester in Singapore, he will earn his bachelor of journalism degree in August.

Harlin, of Moore, OK, earned her bachelor degrees in journalism and Latin American Studies in May. She was editor-in-chief of “The Daily Texan.”

Lee, who grew up in Dallas, is the managing editor of “The Daily Texan” and will continue in that role until she graduates with a bachelor in journalism in December.

“This is journalism at its most pure,” said Ben French, vice president and general manager of UWIRE. “The 100 best student journalists in the country—hard workers, big thinkers and gifted storytellers—nominated by their peers and advisers for their potential to shape the media industry in the years ahead.”

The announcement of the UWIRE 100 is the culmination of a three-month national search for the country’s top 100 collegiate journalists. The selected students have excelled in a particular journalism medium, have a proven commitment to the journalism field and have the potential to help revolutionize their industry.

The UWIRE 100 students hail from 66 different schools, ranging from small liberal arts colleges such as Cabrini, Loras and Hamilton to large state universities. Among the schools represented by multiple members of the UWIRE 100 are the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (five), Penn State University (four), the University of Iowa (four), the University of Florida (three), Syracuse University (three) and Indiana University (three).
