School of Journalism Publications Win Honors in National College Publication Contest

AUSTIN, Texas – Aug. 9, 2007 – Two student-produced publications from the School of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin have earned top prizes in a national competition.

“Burnt Orange Magazine” and “The Texas Journalist” earned first and second place respectively in the 2007 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) student publications contest.

The spring 2007 issue of “Burnt Orange” topped 20 national college magazines in the Single Issue of an Ongoing Print Magazine category. A four-color publication, “Burnt Orange” is produced by undergraduate and graduate journalism students in the magazine management and magazine production classes. Recent journalism graduate Kristin Butler served as editor of the magazine and senior lecturer David Garlock, head of the magazine program, is the publication’s faculty advisor.

The fall 2006 issue of “The Texas Journalist,” which focused on immigration, earned second place in the Newspaper Project category. This semiannual lab newspaper is produced by students enrolled in reporting, feature writing, print and visual design, copy editing and photography classes. The paper is edited by both students and faculty, including clinical professor Wanda Garner Cash, who serves as the faculty advisor, and School of Journalism faculty members Renita Coleman, Rusty Todd, adjunct instructor Erin Mayes and graduate student Amy Zerba.
