School of Journalism Hosts Eighth Annual International Symposium on Online Journalism

AUSTIN, Texas – March 28, 2007 – Editors, executives and scholars from around the world will discuss how news organizations are transforming their operations inside and out – from their business model to the storytelling process – at the International Symposium on Online Journalism March 30 and 31 on The University of Texas at Austin campus.

Produced by the Knight Chair in Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism, the free, two-day symposium will be webcast live via the Internet.

“Each year, editors, producers, executives and academics from around the world convene in Austin to discuss the evolution of this new genre of journalism,” said Professor Rosental C. Alves, the Knight Chair in Journalism and UNESCO Chair in Communication at The University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism. “The symposium provides a concentrated and intense discussion that serves as a barometer for the state of online journalism.”

The symposium features two keynote speakers: Professor Guy Berger, head of the School of Journalism and Media Studies, Rhodes University, South Africa; and Associate Professor Jeff Jarvis, director of the Interactive Journalism program at City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism and blogger at www.BuzzMachine.com.

Journalists from leading online news outlets, including Le Monde Interactif (Paris, France); NYTimes.com; Prisacom/ElPais.com (Madrid, Spain); Semana Magazine (Bogotá, Colombia); UOL (Brazil); USA Today; WallStreetJournal.com; and WashingtonPost.com will participate in panel discussions on topics including:

• Getting the most global medium to live up to its global promise

• The transformation of newspaper to multimedia news organization – The merging of online-print newsrooms and the challenges of a continuous news flow

• The transformation of storytelling techniques – How video and interactive features are changing news production routines

• The transformation of business models – How the online audience and revenues are changing how newspapers do business

• The transformation of journalism from monologue to conversation – Citizens’ participation in news production and dissemination

• The transformation of journalism on a flat world – International perspectives on online journalism

• Strategic positioning in the new media environment

• New journalistic forms and new journalists

Scholars from several U.S. universities, as well as from Canada, England, Mexico and Spain, will present academic research papers during the event. Originally designed as an interactive space for industry professionals to discuss the state of online journalism, the Online Journalism Symposium has grown to include international panelists and a Web-based audience.

Video streaming and real-time news coverage will be available at the symposium Web site: http://journalism.utexas.edu/onlinejournalism/. Questions and commentaries from remote participants will be accepted via e-mail. Transcripts (and some video) of previous symposia also are available at the Web site.
