The University of Texas at Austin to Host Explore UT
College of Communication Showcases Curriculum, Career Paths
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to deliver the evening news? Do you have a knack for catchy slogans? Are you interested in animation? Are you curious about the science of communication? If so, the College of Communication is a must-stop on your Explore UT itinerary.
The University of Texas at Austin will host its eighth annual “Explore UT: The Biggest Open House in Texas!” from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2007. About 30,000 visitors are expected to participate in a day of free hands-on activities, performances, demonstrations and lectures. More than 300 programs – 15 of them in the College of Communication – are being offered for visitors of all ages.
“This is the biggest event of the spring,” said College of Natural Sciences Dean Mary Ann Rankin, the chair of Explore UT. “I don’t think there’s anything better than having everyone, especially kids, come to campus every year and feel that they are part of this university.”
College of Communication students, faculty and staff will host a variety of programs reflecting the curriculum in the college and potential career paths. Program highlights include:
- “Name that Logo/Name that Slogan,” an interactive game from the renown Texas Creative program in the Department of Advertising;
- Student and faculty film showcases where guests can view selections of film work from the Department of Radio-TV-Film
- “Live at 10: You Deliver the News,” a hands-on demonstration that includes a tour of the TV studio and control room used in the School of Journalism
- Innovation and Opportunity in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a chance to explore disciplines of audiology and speech-language pathology and the innovative treatment options for peoples with communicative disorders
- Debate and public speaking performances by top-level collegiate competitors
A favorite among the College of Communication Explore UT events is the “How to Be a Magazine Cover Girl or Boy!”
“In this session, participants will have their photo professionally taken and incorporated into the cover of ‘Orange’ magazine, the annual student magazine of the University of Texas at Austin,” said Dave Garlock, head of the magazine program in the School of Journalism and faculty advisor for “Orange.”
“I think this will give the public some insight into the professionalism behind ‘Orange,’” he continued. “And I hope the experience will make some of our young guests consider careers in journalism and the magazine industry.”
A complete schedule of College of Communication Explore UT programs is available.
All programs are free and open to the public. No registration is required. The event will take place rain or shine. A full list of events is available at the University's website. For more information call the Office of Relationship Management and University Events at 512-471-7753.
The University Co-op, cooperatively owned by the faculty, students and staff of The University of Texas at Austin, is a major sponsor of Explore UT.
