Journalism Scholarship Honors Houston Society Columnist

AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 31, 2007 – A $75,000 permanent endowment has been established at The University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in the memory of alumna and former Houston society writer Francine “Frenchy” Falik (BJ ’71).

The endowment will support an annual scholarship to encourage women to pursue careers in print journalism. The “Frenchy Falik Journalism Award” will be awarded to print journalism students who have worked at “The Daily Texan,” and want to pursue an unpaid internship or independent writing project during the summer between their junior and senior year. The $3,000 award will help off-set travel and living expenses.

As an undergraduate, Falik wrote for “The Daily Texan.” She later returned to her hometown of Houston where she covered society news for the now-defunct “Houston Post” and most recently “PaperCity,” a monthly social magazine.

Falik’s brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Susie Golding, along with her husband James, endowed the scholarship after she died in July following an eight and one-half-year battle with cancer.
