Texas Tribune CEO and editor-in-chief Evan Smith speaks about how data is changing the ways journalists tell stories
Evan Smith, CEO and editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune, spoke about how data is changing the ways journalists tell stories and answered questions from students in the School of Journalism. The Texas Tribune is produced from public data to create a public database that allows easy navigation for users interested in government and public information. Smith said the Texas Tribune is composed of three parts: journalism, data and events.
The editor-in-chief added that his model of creating easier access to data with a focus on issues important to Texans has the potential to make a difference in society.
"The Texas Tribune has been on the cutting edge of journalism," said Smith. "The lack of engagement is the real impediment to progress."
His presentation is part of a Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas series on entrepreneurial journalism.
Ryan Murphy, a recent graduate of the College of Communication, serves as the leader of putting together the database at The Texas Tribune.
