Texas A&M Professor Christopher Swift to discuss Herbert Marcuse and the New Left: Dialectic and Rhetoric, May 8
Event: Christopher Swift, assistant professor in the department of communication at Texas A&M University, will discuss the two forms discourse of German philosopher Herbert Marcuse.
When: 2 to 3 p.m., May 8, 2009
Where: LBJ Room, CMA 5.160
Background: In this talk, Swift argues that Herbert Marcuse's speeches to student activists and his correspondence with Theodor W. Adorno illustrate two forms of discourse that continue to define the academy as such. Academic discourse depends both upon the dialectical pursuit of the truth and the necessarily less subtle communication of this research to others.
