Event: Scholars from across the country will convene on The University of Texas at Austin campus to present original research on language and society. A sampling of topics includes: “Spatialized authenticity in Hip Hop discourse”; “Hebrew GaySpeak: Subverting a gender-based language”; “Co-constructing the ‘Familiar Exotic’ in second language learner discourse”; “Vowels in contact: Mexican Heritage English in Chicago”; and “LOL, what a tangled Web we weave: Strategies for coherence in instant messaging discourse.”
This conference is being hosted by the Austin chapter of SALSA, the College of Communication and the College of Liberal Arts.

Background: Established in 1992, the Symposium About Language and Society — Austin (SALSA) is an entirely student-organized annual conference sponsored by the Departments of Linguistics, Anthropology and Communication Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. At present, SALSA has become internationally recognized by graduate students and faculty alike as a prestigious, interdisciplinary venue for presenting cutting-edge work on the relationship of language and culture to society.
