CinemaScope: The Modern Miracle You See without Special Glasses! Oct. 29

Event: Dr. David Bordwell, professor emeritus in the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will receive the Wayne A. Danielson Award for Distinguished Contributions to Communication Scholarship. In conjunction with the award presentation, he will give a lecture titled, “CinemaScope: The Modern Miracle You See without Special Glasses!” The lecture is free and open to the public.

When: 3-4:30 p.m., Oct. 29, 2007

Background: Dr. Bordwell has written several books on film history and analysis, most recently “The Way Hollywood Tells It” and “Poetics Of Cinema.” With Kristin Thompson, he is the author of two widely-used textbooks, “Film Art: An Introduction” and “Film History: An Introduction.” He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies, an honorary degree from the University of Copenhagen and an award for Excellence in Scholarship on Asian Cinema at the Asian Film Awards.

The Wayne A. Danielson Award recognizes scholars who have made a significant contribution to the understanding of communication. This contribution may stem from new ideas that have important implications for the field or a particular area of study. The contribution also may be viewed as the cumulative impact of a person’s scholarly career.
