The New City: Changing Lifestyles, Changing Neighborhoods, Changing Politics, March 27
Event: A conversation with John King, urban design columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle and Hearst Visiting Fellow.
When: 4-5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 27
Where: CMA 5.160 LBJ Conference Room
Background: The old simplistic notions of blight vs. gentrification, crime and land use restrictions have been altered by a new generation of urban dwellers whose lifestyles help shape a new urban terrain.
This new perspective of life in the city has made old views on development and other urban issues obsolete even though many activists still operate as if it is still 1982 and journalists, too, seem unable to see beyond the old framework. King extols a new approach for thinking and writing about life in this new urban environment, continuing the tradition of critical commentators and analysts of urban life who see and write about cities through the architectural lens to interpret, critique, and mediate the interaction of city planners, urban policies and the public.
This event is sponsored by the School of Journalism and the College of Communication with the support of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
