Brazilian Photographer Andre Cypriano Presents “Latin American Megacities,” March 22

Event: Documentary photographer Andre Cypriano will visit with students and discuss his work photographing remote cultures. His visit concludes Professor Donna DeCesare’s Latin American documentary guest speaker series this semester.

When: 6:30 p.m., Thursday March 22

Where: CMA auditorium 2.320

Background: For more than a decade Brazilian photographer Andre Cypriano has documented remote cultures –– from the people of Nias, Sumatra to those living at the social margins of his native Brazil. His early work focusing on life in the Candido Mendes Penitentiary (known as Brazil’s Alcatraz before it was razed) received a Mother Jones photography award in 1999.

“Rocinha: An Orphan Town,” his documentary portrait of life in Rio de Janiero’s largest favela, earned him a National Geographic ALL ROADS still photography fellowship in 2005. Since publication of his book Rocinha, Cypriano has continued documenting life in Latin American Megacities –– most recently turning his compassionate and discerning eye on life in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela.
