Molly Ivins to Speak at The University of Texas at Austin

EVENT: Nationally syndicated political columnist Molly Ivins will present “The Future of Journalism: Slow Death or Suicide?” as part of the Mary Alice Davis Distinguished Lectureship at The University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism.

Tickets, limited to two per person, are free to the public and available at Bass Concert Hall, the Erwin Center and Hogg Auditorium.

WHEN: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006

WHERE: Hogg Memorial Auditorium at 24th Street and Whitis Avenue (Maps of the campus can be obtained at www.utexas.edu/maps/main). Paid parking available in the San Antonio Garage at 25th and San Antonio Streets.

Background: Ivins’ political column, distributed by Creator’s Syndicate, appears in more than 300 newspapers nationwide. She has written for publications including Esquire, the Houston Chronicle, The Nation, and the New York Times. She has written six best-selling books, including “Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush’s America.”

Established in early 2005 by the Davis family, the Mary Alice Davis Distinguished Lectureship brings notable journalists to campus to discuss the role of journalism in society.

Remembered as a remarkable writer who championed the role of journalism in a democracy, Mary Alice Davis, died in 2004 from ovarian cancer. Ivins was diagnosed with stage III inflammatory breast cancer in 1999. In January, she reported she was again undergoing chemotherapy. Her doctors have just concluded that once again, her disease is “in check.”
