Strauss Institute Hosts Week of Get Out The Vote Activities

The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation is hosting a Get Out The Vote rally featuring various speakers, University of Texas cheerleaders, the longhorn mascot, Hook ‘Em, a brass band, games and prizes to kick off a week of outreach activities geared toward increasing civic participation among young people. Noon to 12:30 p.m. in the West Mall Free Speech area.

The Strauss Institute wants to deputize 50 individuals who can in turn register people to vote. Come to the Texas Union Quadrangle Room to take the oath and get voter registrations forms. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. Free pizza will be available after completing the deputization process. 12:30 p.m. in the Texas Union Quadrangle Room.

Did you know that the average age of an election worker is 72 and that there are shortages of workers each year? Did you know election poll workers can earn $7 to $10 per hour while being an important part of the political process?
The Strauss Institute is recruiting poll workers from the longhorn community to help voters become familiar with equipment, answer questions and facilitate the election process. A poll worker information session will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Texas Union Quadrangle Room. Poll workers must be registered to vote in Travis Co.
Thursday and Friday, Sept. 21 and 22, 2006
Come to the West Mall to register to vote, get prizes and enter the T-shirt contest
Participate in the T-shirt contest by decorating a plain T-shirt with a Get Out the Vote Message and Design. Come to the Strauss Institute GOTV table to fill out an entry form and get your photo taken (front and back). Photos will be posted at www.UTGOTV.org. Send your friends to the site to vote for your design; the shirt with the most votes wins. Voting ends Oct. 23. Winners will be notified by Oct. 31 . First Place wins $100, second receives $50 and third receives $25. Noon to 1 p.m. in the West Mall area.
Background: The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation is hosting a week of Get Out The Vote activities to create more voters and better citizens. Throughout the week, the Strauss Institute will deputize individuals to register voters, recruit poll workers and register voters.
