"McCarthyism and Journalism: Then and Now"

"The Nation" publisher to speak at The University of Texas at Austin

Event: Victor S. Navasky, publisher emeritus and editorial director of "The Nation," will present "McCarthyism and Journalism: Then and Now," a speech sponsored by the School of Journalism and the College of Communication Senior Fellows Program.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

When: 7 p.m., Monday, April 10.

Background: Before coming to "The Nation," Navasky was an editor at "The New York Times Magazine" and wrote a monthly column about the publishing business ("In Cold Print") for the Times Book Review. He is the author of "Kennedy Justice" and "Naming Names," which won an American Book Award, and most recently, "A Matter of Opinion." He is co-author with Christopher Cerf of "The Experts Speak: The Definitive Compendium of Authoritative Misinformation," now in its second edition. In addition to his responsibilities at "The Nation," Navasky is director of the George Delacorte Center for Magazine Journalism at Columbia University and a regular commentator on the public radio program "Marketplace."
