Professor Ben H. Bagdikian to Deliver Lecture, Receive Danielson Award
EVENT: Professor Ben H. Bagdikian, dean emeritus of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, will receive the Wayne A. Danielson Award for Distinguished Contributions to Communication Scholarship. In conjunction with the award presentation, Professor Bagdikian will give a lecture titled "The Journalist as Celebrity: The Kiss of Death." The lecture is free and open to the public.

BACKGROUND: Ben H Bagdikian is a significant American media critic and is considered one of the most respected figures in American journalism. He is Dean Emeritus of the University of California at Berkeley where he taught journalism and served as Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism. A distinguished author and correspondent, he has received numerous honors including The Peabody Award, a Citation of Merit as "Journalism's Most Perceptive Critic" awarded by the American Society of Journalism School Administrators, as well as the James Madison Award given to him by the American Library Association Coalition on Government Information. His widely cited book, The Media Monopoly, examined and warned of the increasing concentration of ownership of the U.S. mass media.
The Wayne A. Danielson Award recognizes scholars who have made a significant contribution to the understanding of communication. This contribution may stem from new ideas that have important implications for the field, or a particular area of study. The contribution also may be viewed as the cumulative impact of a person's scholarly career.
