1. Can I submit material to supplement the online application?
You are required to submit a résumé with your application. It should be emailed as an attachment (MS Word or PDF) to commresume@austin.utexas.edu. The document should be titled in the following format: Last Name, First Name EID
We do not accept supplemental materials such as DVDs, CDs, photos, portfolios or letters of recommendation.
2. Can I apply to Advertising or Public Relations before I complete ADV 318J?
Yes. To be considered for transfer to Advertising or Public Relations, you must be currently enrolled in ADV 318J or have already passed the course with a B or better.
(If you did not take ADV 318J at The University of Texas at Austin, please see this important note.)
3. What GPA do I need to have in order to be accepted into the College of Communication?
There is no set GPA beyond the minimum required for eligibility. The stronger your GPA is, the better your chances of being accepted into your desired major. However, the Committee does consider several factors besides your academic performance.
4. What factors besides GPA does the Committee consider?
• The number of hours taken at UT and elsewhere (if applicable).
• The number of hours taken and grades received in Communication coursework, especially in the intended major, with more weight given to courses taken at UT.
• Relevant extracurricular activities.
• Relevant internships, job experience and volunteer work.
• Application essay (content and presentation).
• Résumé (content and presentation).
5. How many students are accepted?
It varies each semester and by major, and depends on the number of students the College graduates.
6. When are decisions made and what is my next step?
The College of Communication Internal Transfer Committee makes all decisions, which are final. All applications will be reviewed once the University posts your final grades for the semester. Email notifications of the decisions will be sent out shortly thereafter.
Please keep in mind:
• If you are accepted, you will be asked to confirm your major change through a link provided in the notification email.
• Students new to the College of Communication are REQUIRED to attend the transfer orientation session before classes begin.
• You will have a chance to add/drop courses in your new major once you have confirmed and your major change request has been processed by the University.
• You may make an appointment to see an academic advisor once you have confirmed your acceptance into the College of Communication.
7. Can I start taking classes in my desired major? What can I do now to prepare?
We encourage students to start taking classes and do well. Suggested classes are:
• ADV 318J (required for both Advertising and PR; do not take ADV 305)
• CMS 306M, 315M
• CSD 306K, 308K, 311K, 313L, 315S
• J 310
• RTF 305, 314, 316
Also, get involved in student organizations in your desired major and work or volunteer in your field. It shows commitment to the area you are applying for.
