The College of Communication annually awards the Jesse H. Jones Endowed Centennial Fellowships to graduate students who possess exceptional ability in advertising, communication sciences and disorders, journalism, radio-television-film, or communication studies. The fellowships are awarded each Spring for the following academic year. The fellowships are open to masters or doctoral students in their second or subsequent years in their programs. Preference is given to candidates with a strong, interdisciplinary track record.
Fellowship awards are based on the following:
1. Academic achievement, as reflected in the student’s GPA.
2. Demonstrated competence in the field of study, as reflected in the student’s research and/or creative activities.
3. Evidence of an interdisciplinary approach in the student’s scholarship and research interests.
4. Financial need. Although the fellowship award is based primarily on ability and promise, financial need is considered in any final selection where ability and promise appear equal.
A recipient of a Fellowship must be enrolled in the graduate program in a department in the College of Communication and in residence at The University of Texas at Austin during the period of the award. The Fellowship is renewable once on a competitive basis.
Each Spring the Dean's Office announces the recipients of the Fellowships for the following academic year. The fellowship is $5,600 total. The Fellowships are granted in two parts: one half in the Fall semester and one half in the Spring semester. The College also will pay your tuition and required fees for the Fall and Spring semesters. An out of state tuition waiver, when needed, also comes with this Fellowship.
If you are awarded this Fellowship, you should come to the Dean's Office, CMA 4.130, and ask for the form to sign, which will verify your address and arrange for distribution of funds.
Each Jones Fellow presents a brief presentation of his/her work in the Fall semester. These presentations are open to the College, and give a vision of the Fellow's work, with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of the work. Presentations are given during a Brown Bag lunch hosted by the College.
