Michael Wilson (Austin, TX) is Vice President, Advertising Sales for the Austin American Statesman and Statesman.com. Prior to joining Cox Newspapers in August 2005, Wilson had been Vice President, Global Advertising Sales for The Wall Street Journal based in New York. He spent 28 years with Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal in various sales and senior management positions in the United States and Asia. He joined The Wall Street Journal in Houston as a sales representative in 1977 and transferred to New York in 1980. He served the Journal in New York as a financial sales representative, International Advertising Manager, Director of Marketing for WSJ Reports, Classified Sales Director, Vice President, International and Vice President, Advertising Sales. From 1987-1992, he was publisher of The Asian Wall Street Journal based in Hong Kong. During this period he served as the elected chairman of the Society of Hong Kong Publishers, a local organization representing over 100 English and Chinese-language publications. Wilson has also served on the board of directors for CNBC International (2001-2005) and for the International Advertising Association (2002-2005).
Wilson has been involved in the Boy Scouts of America. He earned the designation of Eagle Scout, holds the Order of the Arrow award and has served the program in a number of leadership roles, including Scoutmaster. Born in Houston, Wilson received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. After graduation he worked briefly for the Lewisville (Texas) Daily Leader before joining The Dallas Morning News as an advertising sales representative in June 1975.
