Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk, Ph.D.

Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk (Houston, TX) has dedicated her professional career to the understanding of language and learning disorders. Before receiving her graduate degrees she served as an elementary school teacher, which gave her insight into the problems children had in learning.

Carrow-Woolfolk founded and began as first director of the Harry Jersig Center in 1955. She also taught at the Baylor University College of Medicine, was chief of the speech pathology service at three separate institutions in Houston- St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Methodist Hospital – and was professor and head of the speech pathology and audiology program at The University of Texas.

A significant contributor to the profession of speech language pathology and audiology, she is the author of several books on reading and language theory, including Learning to Read (1994) and Language Theory: Assessment and Intervention (1988). She has also created several widely used assessment instruments, including Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language (1999: CASL), Oral and Written Language Survey (1995 OWLS), and the Test for Auditory Comprehension of Language (1985; TACL); and she is the author of numerous articles and book chapters. In addition, in the 1960’s and 70’s, Carrrow-Woolfolk was publishing on the subject of multilingualism and multicultural speech and language issues in Spanish/English speakers. Recently, Carrow-Woolfolk has turned her attention to genealogy research. Her 2004 book, Pioneers, Patriots and Planters (Wynnton Publishing), is the historic narrative of a family’s journey through the southern states where they first became settlers.

During her long career, Carrow-Woolfolk was active in ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association), serving as a member of the Houston State Delegates, chair of the Committee on Clinical Standards, member of the Publications Board and the Committee on Terminal Education, as well as editor of the Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders. She was also president of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association and associate editor of Texas Communicologist.

Dr. Carrow-Woolfolk holds a bachelor’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake College, a master’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and a doctorate from Northwestern University.
